It is characterised by quarters, with shoelace eyelets that are sewn on top of the vamp. This construction method, also known as "open lacing", in contrast with the closed style of the Oxford shoe. Derby shoes provide a much more versatile fit as the shoe can be adjusted to be as tight or as loose as the wearer finds comfortable and so, in turn, a Derby shoe will probably fit a larger variety of foot shapes.
